Acoustic Neuroma
The acoustic nerve, or alternatively known as the "vestibular nerve," is located in the ear area, and its physiological function involves hearing and balance. It is known as a benign inflammation affecting that nerve. It is classified among the Schwann cell tumors responsible for preserving nerve cells. Acoustic neuroma consists of a single bundle growing inside the nerve, characterized by slow growth. Sometimes it may not grow and remains asymptomatic, according to some medical studies conducted. Treatment options vary, whether through periodic monitoring, taking prescribed medications, or surgery.
What Are the Treatment Options for Acoustic Neuroma?
- Monitoring and Observation:
Includes periodic monitoring and examination using magnetic resonance imaging and hearing tests, with intervention in case of symptoms or increased tumor size.
- Radiation Therapy:
Used in treating small-sized tumors, with a rare possibility of tumor transformation into malignancy after treatment.
- Acoustic Neuroma Surgery:
Multiple surgical methods are available, choosing the appropriate method based on tumor size and potential complications.
- Supportive Therapy:
Includes the use of assistive hearing devices and surgical options to address hearing loss.
